Dairy goats are not nearly as numerous as dairy cattle in the United States, but, for many other countries of the world, they are the leading milk producers because they are well adapted to limited areas and require less specialized feed, most of which can be produced by the small landowner.

Selecting breeding doe replacements is a multi-step process that is an important part of any herd management program. Breeding females are a vital part of the goatherd, and the right or wrong decision can make or break a herd’s livelihood and consequently a producer’s profitability. Many factors may play a role in the selection process, including the type of breed being raised, the kidding season, and management practices.  By Sydney Hayter

Agricultural industry reports reflect meat goat enterprises as one of the fastest-growing livestock sectors in the United States today. Learning activities focus on these major concepts: selection, management, nutrition, exhibiting, health, and quality assurance. Record keeping is an important part of the Meat Goat Project and the meat goat business. Records are kept on the breeding, weight gain, type, and amount of feed fed. Vaccinations and other herd health practices are noted.
