Dairy Cattle Fitting & Showmanship

4-H members who are not 8 years old by 9/1/2024 CANNOT participate in this Contest/Project/Show Area.

Every animal emerging from the pasture or barn needs time and attention to get her show-ring ready. The showman on the other end of the halter needs to be prepared as well. Faults in either fitting or showing could lead to a less successful show experience than one might have hoped for. For youth, especially, showmanship is a great place to shine regardless of how an animal performs in conformation classes.  Source - UGA Bulletin 1427.

Dairy Cattle Skill-a-Thon Rules

The Skill-a-thon will be open for two hours (4 PM to 6 PM) on the day of dairy entry.

  • All contestants are entered as individuals in their respective age groups.
  • Contestants may not bring notes, or books of any kind into the contest area. Contestants may not speak with anyone other than designated adults while they are participating in the skill-a-thon. No cell phones or other electronic devices may be used.
  • Exhibitors who are 8-18 may participate in the skill-a-thon.
  • Contestants are not permitted to leave the area of the contest once they have begun. Leaving the area without completing the contest will result in the exhibitor forfeiting.
  • The top 3 in each age group will be awarded.
  • Skill-a-thon winners will be announced and awarded at the end of the SRF Dairy Show.

In the U.S., milk comes from breeds of cattle genetically selected for milk production. At one time in the U.S., cattle were selected simultaneously for beef and milk production. This is still the case in many parts of the world. The common dairy breeds in the U.S. today have been selected almost exclusively for milk production for many generations.

  EXCEPTION: Dog & Horse Show participants MUST be turned in at show entry Saturday, 1 March 2025

COLLEGE/TRADE SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS: Scholarship Application Deadline MUST be BY 4:30p on Wednesday, 5 March 2025

SHOWMANSHIP CONTEST: You MUST signup for showmanship at the check-in table during March entry. Late entries WILL NOT be accepted.
