How Can I Participate?

Participants in the Suwannee River Youth livestock Show and Sale are bonafide members of 4-H, FFA and FCCLA youth development programs in Dixie, Gilchrist, Levy Counties Florida.

Participants of the Suwannee River Fair must be bonafide members in good standing of 4-H, FFA or FCCLA clubs or chapters of Dixie, Gilchrist or Levy Counties.  Verification of membership qualifications is the sole responsibility of the advisors and agents and implies member compliance with national, state and local membership rules and policy. Such membership is certified by the signature of the appropriate FFA or FCCLA Advisor, 4-H Agent and or 4-H Leader on the appropriate entry form.

Feeder Steer Show Rules

BEEF GENERAL REGULATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  1. The SRF General Rules and Regulations apply to this Division and Shows.
  2. Health Requirements 5C-4.0017 & 5C-4.002
  3. All cattle must have an official health certificate to enter the show.
  4. All cattle must be polled or dehorned at the time of the initial weigh-in, limited at the discretion of the board.
  5. All cattle must be entered at the Suwannee River Fair pavilion at the time of the initial (1st) weigh-in. All cattle will be weighed and must have an official fair identification tag applied in the animals ear at this time.
  6. All vehicles will enter the fairgrounds at the discretion of the Board and Show superintendent.
  7. All cattle must be halter broken in March. A screening committee appointed by the board of directors may sift out any animal that becomes unruly and dangerous at any time during the show and sale.
  8. All cattle must be clipped prior to arrival at the fairgrounds in March, according to good show ring practices.
  9. All Beef Division shows and contests will be blow and go (shampoo and blow-dry). This means no hair care products. Wash, Blow, Comb, Show. If you have grooming products on your animal you will not show.
  10. Cattle must be shown with show halters only.
  11. All Beef Cattle Must Stay In Designated Area. If an animal leaves their designated area it will be disqualified from the show.
  12. Homegrown Champions, a Grand and Reserve, grown on the family farm, will receive a plaque.  Homegrown means the mother of the show animal was owned by your family’s farm.

Market Steer Contests

MARKET GROUP STEER CONTEST

  1. A steer group will consist of 3 animals. These animals are to be selected from all steers accepted for entry from each individual 4-H club or FFA chapter participating in the fair. Any club or chapter may enter only one group of steers.
  2. Groups selected should be uniform by size, conformation and desirable carcass traits. Judging will be based on 50% uniformity and 50% carcass traits.
  3. Group entries selected for competition by chapter or club shall be submitted to the Superintendent of the show by 12 noon prior to the start of the market steer show.
  4. Awards will be given to the top 3 groups.

MARKET GAIN IN WEIGHT CONTEST

  1. Designed to measures the exhibitor’s ability as a herdsman to select and feed an animal for economical gain.
  2. Steer committee will be responsible for weighing and certifying these weights to the sponsor. Any certified steer entry in the SRF, which meets contest rules, will be eligible to compete.
  3. Each steer must be identified at the time of weigh-in with an ear tag and EID provided by the association. The show classification weight will be used at the end of the feeding period weight.
  4. Awards will be given for top 3 places.
